One of Memphis’ Truest Talents
It was in the early 2000's when Memphis Hip-Hop artist, Maru, stepped on the music scene. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Maru relocated to Memphis at the age of 14. Surrounded by the musical talents in his family, including his father and two brothers, Maru begin to rap at the age of 10. His older brother (Slicse) is a renowned producer in Memphis, TN and abroad.
“It’s just in my DNA”, he stresses when asked about how he feels about the music.
Influenced by legendary rappers such as Tupac, LL Cool J and Eminem, Maru mentions that his style is Memphis on another level.
“It’s not just a Memphis style, it's like a new lane for the Memphis sound, period.”
To Maru, music was never a hobby, it was his life and he wanted to make a career of it.
“From the first time I stepped on the stage, I knew I wanted to do this…”
Tired of working 9 to 5 jobs, he began to focus more on his musical talent, ghost writing and producing different artists and performing at various clubs throughout the Memphis and surrounding area including 380 Beale's "Plush Club", which he claims, was the “weekend spot!” He has also opened up for and featured with independent as well as major artists.
After grinding for 10+ years, Maru has now made a name for himself in the hip-hop community. His latest single, "Bodywind", has made a great impact on the industry having been exposed to many states in the US as well as various countries worldwide. “The feedback has been amazing!” says Maru.
