The Dynamic Sounds Orchestra
The Dynamic Sounds Orchestra was the backing band for the Chi-Lites during the early 1970's. If you saw the Chi-Lites perform live anytime from around 1972 up until around 1978, you also saw and heard The Dynamic Sounds Orchestra. They traveled all over the United States and Europe with the Chi-Lites during that time. Several individual members of the band can be heard on some Chi-Lite songs that were produced during that time, and the entire band is featured on the last album, "Hot On A Thing", that featured all of the original Chi-Lites; Eugene, Marshall, Squirrel and Red. The Dynamic Sounds Orchestra is also featured on Lorrell Simon's album, "Mellow, Mellow, Right On", which was produced by Eugene Record. When Eugene Record left the group to go solo on Warner Bros. Records, some members of The Dynamic Sounds Orchestra participated on all three albums produced by Warner Bros. The Dynamic Sounds Orchestra went into the studio to produce an album sometime around 1976-1977. However, before the project could be completed and shopped, the band disbanded. Shortly thereafter, the masters from the recording sessions were destroyed in a house fire. All that remained were some rough mixes on cassette tapes. Of course this was before the onset of digital music technology to the industry. Each member went their separate ways pursuing their livelihood. The break up was not a brutal one and the band members continued to stay in touch, reminiscing about the "good old days", not really focusing on the project that had been produced. As time went on, some members began to experiment with digital music. Percussionist Otis Gould, now married and living and teaching and playing in Atlanta, one day stumbled upon one of the rough mix cassette tapes and gave a listen. The material still sounded great and he began the process of digitizing the tracks. Although they were only two track mix downs, he was able, using Cakewalk and WaveLab, to began to enhance the tracks. They sounded good but were not broadcast quality. It was not until Otis switched from PC to MAC and began to use the Logic program that he was able to began to hear significant enhancements in the quality of the recording. Then, Logic X was introduced, along with several mastering templates, and the real magic began. In the beginning, one real stumbling block was trying to shop material around to different record labels. Now, with the availability of companies like CDBABY and Disc Makers, the need for a record company has disappeared. For those of you who are into the "old school" 70's sound, here is an opportunity to hear some great original material from that era. There is nothing sampled or sequenced on this project. Every note you hear was painstakingly recorded by a group of talented human beings. We felt this music had to be heard so the world would know that The Dynamic Sounds Orchestra had existed. Who knows what could have happened had things turned out differently early on. It was not to be then, it can be now. Hope you enjoy our delayed offering.
