Who ever invented the “box” that most artists find themselves cast in, never had a chance to hear Couleen LaGon. This ATLien is writing and producing music from another world. In this time of copying melodies and overused song structures, Couleen is crafting a soulful, rhythmic and inspiring left-field musical experience, unlike anything heard before on the Earth. Sounding like a Johnny Cash meets Outkast mashup, his musical valley is deep, incorporating influences of infectious pop, country, rock, rap and electronic elements, under a deep, resonating vocal tone reminiscent of the days of Barry White and Isaac Hayes. “I know that my mission is to inspire the people and help set the captives free”. Couleen thinks of himself as a healer, and believes that his music is a vessel to help "lift that monkey" off the back of the people. Inspired by such artists as Radiohead, Nirvana, N.W.A., Crosby Stilly & Nash, Earth Wind & Fire, Zero-7 and the Beetles, Couleen was heavily influenced by the bass music on the airwaves (and on the cassette tapes) in Atlanta that took over rap music in the late 80’s and early 90’s. As a producer, Couleen was discovered by Cee-Lo Green, who later signed him to a production deal with his Radiculture Records label imprint, under the pseudo-name “Skot Free”. Since then, Couleen has produced music and videos for film, television, and the web, developed an artist that was signed to Interscope Records and even produced the single “Superbad” by Diamond (feat. Cee-Lo) that found rotation on MTV. Even with modest success, Couleen LaGon found it necessary to reinvent himself once more, discovering that his true expression was found only in solitude. After Radiculture Records folded, Diamond was dropped from Warner Bros. and the artist he developed was let go from Interscope, Couleen began focusing on his own songs, crafting his genre defying debut album, “Delivery System”, while producing and mixing for artists in Atlanta and abroad. Most recently, Couleen has collaborated with another Atlanta staple, the country rap legend, Dj Burn One. Featured on the critically acclaimed album “F.A.I.T.H” by Scotty ATL, Couleen was also granted a spot for his single “Back Inside My Friend”, on the long awaited Dj Burn One album “Greenwood” and subsequently found some press on noisey.com upon the albums release. “The harder you work, the luckier you get.”, has become a tag line for Couleen these days. Working on a new album and supporting the official release of “Left Right Left”, Couleen and his team are making believers out of the world. Being added to playlists and radio station programs daily, Couleen LaGon is stepping out of the background, and into his destiny. Comments are closed.
